Breast implant illness, often called BII, is a term used for systemic symptoms reported by some people with breast implants. These can include fatigue, joint or muscle pain, and difficulty with memory or concentration.
What is known about BII?
The FDA reports symptoms with all types of breast implants. The causes and the relationship to implants remain uncertain. There is no specific diagnostic test for BII, and other possible causes of symptoms also need evaluation.
Can it be prevented?
No implant type, monitoring routine, or lifestyle plan has been shown to guarantee prevention of BII. Routine follow-up remains important for implant care, but it should not be described as a proven way to prevent systemic symptoms.
Discuss your concerns
Some patients report improvement after implant removal, but improvement is not guaranteed. Discuss symptoms, implant history, and the benefits and risks of your options with your care team.
Before choosing breast implants
Use your consultation to ask about implant risks, follow-up, alternatives, and the possibility of future surgery. Bring your questions so that your decision reflects your own priorities.
